About Duchal
Duchal Nursery is a forward thinking independent nursery in the heart of Kilmacolm which has been providing excellent specialist pre-school education, preparing children for the next step into primary school, since 1967! Being an independent nursery our children move on to a variety of local primary schools in Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and Glasgow.
The nursery goes from strength to strength with on going changes and improvements. The opening of our new building at Birkmyre Park in 2008 and our garden makeover in 2015 have given us amazing facilities for the children to to enjoy. Since 2020 we have been part of the free 1140hrs of funded nursery provision ensuring everyone has access to this amazing nursery.
We are delighted that we are continuing our programme of development, we have added to our core morning sessions with the introduction of optional extended days offering daily care from 8.00am until 6.00pm. This gives parents increased flexibility on hours and is an exciting addition for the children, complementing their core morning nursery session.
At Duchal Nursery School our teachers strive to ensure that the children thrive in their own unique way. Children flourish in our stimulating environment and make excellent progress in their own learning and development. The individual needs, interests and abilities of the children are truly catered for and supported with our fantastic teacher to child ratio, ensuring that they become confident and eager learners across the curriculum.
With highly experienced and qualified staff, unique park location and purpose built facilities Duchal Nursery offers a stimulating environment for children to flourish in their pre school learning and development.
Duchal sets out to prepare children to become well-balanced entrants to formal education. It provides an education of the highest standard, using the most advanced principles and methods.
We go into partnership with parents so that together we can build on all that has been achieved before children come into the nursery school. Our aim is to work with parents to help children achieve their potential in all areas of their development.
We provide a warm, caring, secure and stimulating environment, totally geared to the 3-5 year old. We foster a family atmosphere, encouraging children to help one another and, in particular, the older children are encouraged to help younger ones.
Our high teacher to child ratio allows us to get to know all the children in our care. It also enables us to give time and reassurance to any child who may need a little extra attention.
As the only independent specialist pre school establishment in the area, our aims are all centred around providing the best early years, pre school preparation for our children, there are no distractions with other departments. Our staff not only have a wealth of early years experience, they are also parents themselves so have a greater understanding of what is required to care for the children.

Duchal pupils 1969
Duchal was set up in 1967 by a group of local parents who wanted to establish a nursery within the village, creating a caring environment whilst providing the best care. From a time when nursery education did not feature on the political radar until now when it is on everyone’s agenda, Duchal was 30 years ahead of its time and for that we must thank the far sightedness of its founders.
Below are photos of the original nursery, in the old pavilion at Birkmyre Park where it was located until 2007. It then temporarily moved to the Kilmacolm Scout Hut while the new nursery was built. This opened in December 2008 with an extension to the garden in 2011 and upgrade in 2015 and 2021 to include astroturf to allow for all year round use as well as the extendable awning to allow outside learning and play sheltered from the Scottish weather, rain or shine!
